Who or what is Smash Hitley? It's hard to explain.
He is definitely not a DJ. Smash is a musician who creates epic audio visual remixes and performs them totally live without sequencers or backing tracks. Taking several touchstones (samples) from all manner of music and spoken word recordings, Hitley combines and places them in an entirely different context to build new works. He then takes photos and videos, adds stunning visual effects, and attaches them via MIDI to various notes on his synthesizer. Sometimes erotic, sometimes funny, often a bit of social commentary and a humorous take on the cult of celebrity. All music and video is generated in real-time by the notes he plays. The result is unique and electrifying. Some pieces have over 50 layers of sound all being played live.
Above is a low rez clip of a demo for Samsung. An excerpt from Calvin Klein. A totally live performance. This short clip features samples from Miss Ellen Reid, The Stooges, James Brown, Billie Holiday, Propaganda and Led Zeppelin along with Smash doing his thing.
Floydianisms is a tribute to Rick Wrigjht's stellar synth work on Dark Side Of The Moon. Again a totally live performance with video being triggered by the notes on the synthesizer (on the right).
